I am a runner. Yes, really. Jo Whiley told me.
Over the last 9 weeks I have been completing the Couch To 5K programme. The programme consists of three runs each week, delivered via podcasts by a trainer of your choice; including Jo Whiley, Michael Johnson and Sarah Millican.
The fun begins with 60 second runs followed by 90 second walks, repeated 7 times. Gradually you build up and the walks get less frequent, and the runs get longer. Oh, yes they do! By week 9, you should be able to run for 30 minutes non stop. And believe me, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be able to complete it.
Couch to 5K is a Hercules Zero to Hero situation. Your trainer guides you throughout the whole exercise by telling you how far you've run and when to take a break, as well as sharing tips and tricks. The feeling of accomplishment at the end of each activity is how I imagine the cast must feel on opening night during a curtain call - proud, exhilarated... and a little bit knackered!
The best thing about the app (which you can download for free) is that it allows you to play music through your usual player, as well as listening to the podcasts.
To help you begin your running journey, I have compiled a musical theatre playlist to keep you company and motivate you on your way.
"Bring It On"! Get Whipped Into Shape with Elle Woods, and become an unstoppable avalanche as it races down a hill with the nicest kids in town. From London to Milan, the Sex Is In The Heel (of your running shoes) and everybody's Footlose. Because, At The End Of The Day, you're a superstar and you don't even know it. Fabulous, Baby!
Would it be too far to say all of your neighbours will be Waving Through A Window as you run on by?
Okay, I'm signing off now.
Let It Go.
